Working Group 4
This working group (WG4) explores the role of sustainable consumption in mitigating the impact of human activities on biodiversity and ecosystem services, while actively promoting actions aimed at their protection and enhancement.
Background on the creation of the Working Group
Existing consumption patterns play a role in the rapid degradation of nature and the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Biodiversity loss is just as much of a global environmental challenge and equally as threatening as climate change and pollution – the three of them being strongly interlinked and forming the current “triple planetary crisis”.
To contribute to a paradigm shift, the One Planet network Consumer Information Programme set up the Working Group 4 “Biodiversity and Consumption”. The goal is to help reduce the negative impacts of consumption on nature by activating stakeholders in policy, business and civil society to enable consumers to make informed choices for sustainable consumption.
Working Group Leadership
The Working Group 4 on Biodiversity and Consumption is led by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) with the support of Consumers International and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.
