Africa Natures Organic Food
Africa Natures Organic Food is an enterprise working in the Food and Agricultural Systems with focus on sustainable production and consumption. Zambia is a country faced with double malnutrtion and mainly affecting children under the age of five and now adults with non communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases on the increase. A lot of Zambians do not have access to good sources of nutrition. The production of food is highly based on maize centric systems that have seen the Zambian government over the last 60 years subsidide production of maize. The smallholder farmers have been cultivating maize and rarely do they grow other crops. Crop diversification remains a greater challenge among the smallholder farmers. On the other hand, the consumers have limited choices of the foods that are available at their disposal.
The organisation promotes sustainable production of food mainly Agroecology to improve soil fertility, water resources management and their immediate environment. We train farmers in agroforestry mainly integrating forest fruit trees and improving their production systems by adopting sustainable methods. We have a strong media presence on state and private media houses where we feature on selected topics on food systems. We are highly involved in Food Soveregnity campaigns working on policy advocay and innovations to improve sustainable consumptions.
The products from forests and agro systems are processed into various food products. The by products are use for producing other usable products to meet energy demands and at the same time add to income activities for the local people. The thrust of our activities are towards building the capacity of the local food producers to embrace circular economy principles to improve the quality of their lives while upholding the integrity of their environment.
