Toca Travel

Toca Travel, a global tour operator, is working to reduce plastic waste across its operations and partner network. Toca Travel prioritises accommodations and suppliers which have eliminated single-use plastics or implemented refillable and compostable alternatives. As part of client education, Toca Travel provides pre-departure materials encouraging travelers to pack reusable bottles, bags, and toiletry containers. Internally, Toca Travel has shifted to plastic-free shipping materials and digital documentation to minimise unnecessary packaging. Toca Travel also promotes community-based experiences with NGOs and properties engaged in coastal and marine conservation, many of which include plastic clean-up initiatives.

Commitments:

In the framework of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, Toca Travel commits to:

  • Encouraging affiliated organisations and businesses or partners to join the GTPI by integrating GTPI principles into the vendor onboarding and annual review process, encouraging hotels, DMCs, and activity providers to reduce plastic use and formally join the initiative.
  • By the end of 2025, Toca Travel aims to have at least 50% of preferred partners actively committed to eliminating single-use plastics or enrolled in a formal sustainability initiative and also plans to share GTPI resources through regular partner communications. By 2030, Toca Travel aims to have 75% of preferred supply chain partners and in-destination providers aligned with, or formally committed to, the GTPI or equivalent plastic reduction policies.
  • Advising and guiding affiliated organisations, businesses or partners to better manage plastics in their operations by incorporating plastic reduction criteria into the supplier evaluation process starting in Q3 2025. This includes sharing best practices—such as eliminating single-use plastics, offering refillable amenities, and using biodegradable packaging—during regular communications and contract negotiations.
  • Communicating successes to affiliated organisations and partners through multiple channels to ensure visibility among partners, suppliers, travelers, and local stakeholders. Starting in Q4 2025, Toca Travel will feature plastic reduction milestones and partner achievements in a biannual newsletter and share highlights on social media platforms and the company website. For travelers, Toca Travel will incorporate positive impact stories into pre-trip materials to encourage responsible behaviour. By 2026, Toca Travel plans to publish an annual summary showcasing own progress and partner contributions, reinforcing a collective commitment to sustainable travel practices.
  • Reporting publicly and annually on progress made towards these targets through own platforms.
