Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Coimbra

Role in programme(s):

Commitments:

The Intermunicipal Community of the Region of Coimbra represents 19 municipalities of the central region of Portugal and has been work transversely in its various areas of activity, in order to promote behaviors and initiatives that respect the environment, natural resources in order to the sustainable development. All areas of intervention of this entity have direct and indirect implications with the tourism sector. Our work is guided by a strong commitment to sustainable development of the territory that involves investing in eco-tourism projects, aimed at a niche market that enhance the protection of endogenous resources, as well as the rehabilitation of ecosystems more weakened by the tourist pressure. At the same time, we work with the gastronomy and restaurant sector in order to create incentives for the consumption of local products, also allowing the creation of short circuits that greatly reduce the environmental impacts of this economic activity. As the European Gastronomy Region 2021-2022, we have already achieved some results in this direction, and this is only the beginning of a long journey that we are already making. For us, this commitment have an enormous importance to accelerate climate action to cut global tourism emissions and increase our daily effort to contribute to the reduction of negative impacts of tourism industry in our Region. We are working to have a strategy that aims to involve most of the region’s tourism stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of sustainable consumption and production, considerating not only economic value but rather the regeneration of ecosystems, biodiversity and communities. We also will encourage tourism stakeholders to subscribe the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.
