The session will address these key questions:

  • How can national policies and frameworks effectively support cities/local governments in implementing food loss and waste- reduction strategies and initiatives?
  • In what ways can cities drive innovation and contribute to the development of national food loss and waste reduction policies?

The concept note and agenda are available in English and French.

Food loss and waste remain pressing challenges for sustainability, food security, and environmental health across the Mediterranean. With over 70% of the region’s population residing in urban areas, cities play a pivotal role as both major consumers and generators of food waste. Despite the daunting statistics - such as the 59 million tonnes of food wasted annually in the EU or the 114 kilograms of food waste per person in the Near East and North Africa - urban areas are uniquely positioned to drive innovation and systemic change. From repurposing food waste into compost or biogas to implementing circular economy solutions, cities can lead transformative actions that enhance resource efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and foster economic inclusion by creating green jobs.

The 8th webinar of the SFS-MED Platform will explore how coordinated local and national efforts can effectively reduce food loss and waste in Mediterranean cities, driving the shift towards sustainable agrifood systems. It will provide a platform to share insights and experiences on integrating food loss and waste reduction strategies into urban and national policies, leveraging innovation, and fostering partnerships. Participants will also discuss the enabling role of multi-level governance, capacity building, and inclusive approaches in addressing food loss and waste while enhancing regional collaboration and ensuring sustainable solutions for the Mediterranean region.
