Zero Waste Story – Smart Waste Ambon - Transforming Waste Management in Remote Communities
In Ambon, Moluccas, Indonesia, an innovative approach to waste collection and sorting is redefining sustainability on a remote island. Smart Waste Ambon, a collaboration led by Recovered Indonesia (PT Milion Limbah Indonesia) and supported by Partnerships for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G) and the Dutch Enterprise Agency, introduces an efficient and community-driven waste management system.
Launched between 2022 and 2023, the initiative is addressing critical waste management challenges through a source-segregation model engaging 2,000 households, complemented by educational programmes in schools. By implementing strategically located community collection points and equipping the system with a compactor truck, the project has significantly improved waste transportation efficiency—enhancing safety, hygiene, and ergonomics with closed, automatically lifted bins.
What sets Smart Waste Ambon apart is its emphasis on local participation and behavioural change. Initially met with hesitation, the project’s collection points—distinguished by colour-coded bins made from sustainable local materials—have rapidly gained community acceptance, with increasing demand for additional drop-off locations. A modern compactor truck has revolutionised waste transport, increasing efficiency by two to four times while improving safety, ergonomics, and hygiene for waste workers.
At the heart of the initiative, a state-of-the-art semi-mechanised sorting facility processes up to 12 tonnes of waste daily, ensuring valuable materials are recovered and channelled into recycling through local partner Recovered Indonesia. This facility not only enhances recovery rates but also provides a blueprint for sustainable waste management in other remote and island communities facing logistical and infrastructural constraints. The initiative has also created 28 stable, green jobs, offering safer working conditions to informal waste pickers previously reliant on landfill scavenging.
This success story illustrates how practical, well-designed interventions can unlock circular economy potential, even in geographically isolated regions. As governments, businesses, and civil society mark Zero Waste Day, Smart Waste Ambon stands as a testament to how waste is not worthless—it is an opportunity for transformation, economic growth, and environmental resilience.
