Towards Greater Policy Alignment: Rwanda’s Food Systems Transformation Journey
What makes Rwanda’s experience in linking agendas for agriculture, nutrition, and climate particularly learn-worthy? As one of Africa’s most densely populated nations, Rwanda has taken bold steps to transform its food system through its first strategy explicitly grounded in a food systems approach, the Fifth Strategic Plan for Agricultural Transformation (PSTA5).
This case study, produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), captures how national actors are addressing persistent challenges such as malnutrition, youth unemployment and climate vulnerability, while aligning diverse priorities into a cohesive policy agenda.
Featuring voices from across sectors, it offers valuable insights into how collective learning, inclusive dialogue, institutional coordination, and long-term planning have positively influenced Rwanda’s journey towards more sustainable and inclusive outcomes.
The story is part of a broader series on country-level food systems transformation developed under the One Planet Network Sustainable Food Systems Programme, with support from the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture.
