GreenPro: Enabling Supply Chain Decarbonisation through Product Ecolabelling
As industries across the world commit to ambitious climate goals, supply chain emissions have emerged as a critical challenge. In many manufacturing sectors—particularly automotive—more than 85% of emissions originate from the supply chain, making supplier engagement essential for achieving net-zero targets.
The GreenPro ecolabel, a Type-1 ecolabelling programme developed by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), is playing an important role in enabling industries to decarbonise their value chains while promoting sustainable consumption and production. Based on ISO 14024, GreenPro provides credible environmental certification for products that meet stringent sustainability criteria.
Using a life-cycle assessment approach, GreenPro evaluates environmental impacts across the entire product lifecycle—from raw material extraction and manufacturing to usage and end-of-life management. This enables manufacturers to identify environmental hotspots, quantify product-level carbon footprints, and develop targeted decarbonisation strategies.
The ecolabel supports Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) like Volvo Group India, TVS Motors, John Deere India etc in making informed procurement decisions by helping them identify environmentally responsible and low-carbon products within their supply chains. In doing so, GreenPro enables companies to align with emerging sustainability frameworks such as ESG disclosures, BRSR reporting, and global climate commitments.
A significant milestone has been the adoption of the GreenPro ecolabel for two-wheelers, where the entire vehicle is being ecolabelled—demonstrating the growing integration of sustainability at the product level in the automotive sector. At the same time, GreenPro has been engaging supply chain manufacturers, enabling suppliers to measure and reduce the environmental footprint of their components and contribute to more sustainable value chains.
Beyond decarbonisation, GreenPro enhances market transparency by providing reliable sustainability information to buyers and consumers. This empowers responsible purchasing decisions, differentiates green products, and strengthens the competitiveness of Indian industries in sustainability-driven global markets.
To date, the programme has engaged more than 700 manufacturers and ecolabelled over 14,500 products across more than 60 product categories. As the automotive industry advances toward its Net Zero 2050 commitments, tools such as GreenPro ecolabelling play a critical role in helping manufacturers measure product-level carbon footprints based on Life Cycle Impact Assessment and implement practical decarbonisation roadmaps.
By enabling industries to measure, manage, and reduce product-level emissions, GreenPro is helping build transparent, low-carbon, and sustainable supply chains for the future.
