UNEA-7 side event: Digital Product Information Systems for a Resilient Planet: Advancing Circularity and Transparency
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) / One Planet Network, together with the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the South American Region (BCRC Argentina) and the Partnership for Action on Challenges relating to E-waste II (PACE II), will co-host an official side event on Digital Product Information Systems for a Resilient Planet: Advancing Circularity and Transparency at the Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Kenya. This event will take place on 10 December 2025, from 13:15 to 14:45 (CEST) at the Mt Kilimanjaro Room, UNEP Headquarters.
As the environmental footprint of products such as electronics and textiles continues to grow through increasing waste streams, hazardous substances and complex global supply chains, Digital Product Information Systems (DPIS), including digital product passports and traceability platforms, have emerged as key enablers of circularity and transparency.
This official UNEA-7 side event builds on the Impact Initiative on Digitalization for a Circular Economy (D4CE), led by the One Planet Network in partnership with ITU, UNIDO, the Wuppertal Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The session will introduce the blueprint for a Global DPIS Framework, showcasing ongoing efforts to advance international standards, enhance data interoperability, and strengthen global cooperation for sustainable value chains.
The session aims to build consensus on key data categories and information requirements to ensure that DPIS effectively contributes to ambitious sustainability goals. It seeks to promote international cooperation among countries to enhance system interoperability. Additionally, the event will contribute to UNEA-7 discussions on digital sustainability, lifecycle accountability, and the environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste, highlighting the role of digitalization as a catalyst for circular economies.
Expected outcomes
- Broader stakeholder engagement in the development of a global DPIS framework.
- Enhanced visibility of ITU standards on e-waste and circular economy.
- Commitments to pilot or scale DPIS at national and regional levels.
- Input to UNEA discussions on digital governance and sustainability
