Regional Dialogue on Sustainable Lifestyles in Asia and the Pacific
The Sustainable Lifestyles Regional Dialogue in Asia-Pacific, held on November 28, 2024, gathered around 75 participants, including policymakers, researchers, business leaders, and representatives from civil society. Among them, 58% were male and 42% female. Participants hailed from diverse sectors: 40% from academia, 20% from civil society, 15% from international organizations, and the rest representing governments and the private sector.
This collaborative dialogue was designed to foster regional action on sustainable lifestyles, with a particular focus on behavioral shifts to reduce environmental impacts. The discussions emphasized the need for systemic approaches, cross-sector collaboration, and innovative interventions tailored to the Asia-Pacific context.
The Asia-Pacific region, home to over half of the global population, faces significant environmental and social challenges driven by rapid urbanization, economic growth, and shifting consumption patterns.
These factors have contributed to unsustainable practices, resulting in increasing greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. Sustainable lifestyles—characterized by behaviors and habits that minimize resource use and waste while promoting equity and well-being—are central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
The dialogue built upon the UNEA 6.8 resolution, adopted in March 2024, emphasizes the need for transformative shifts in individual and collective behaviors to address overconsumption and resource inefficiencies. By facilitating regional collaboration and sharing innovative practices, this dialogue aimed to advance sustainable consumption patterns and empower stakeholders to adopt impactful actions.
