From a Global Roadmap to Local Action Circular Textiles for Asia Pacific
The textile industry is a cornerstone of global economic activity, employing millions across its value chain. However, its environmental footprint is profound, contributing to high levels of water consumption, chemical pollution, and waste generation. According to UNEP, the sector is responsible for approximately 20% of global wastewater and 10% of global carbon emissions, making it one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation. Additionally, the industry’s reliance on unsustainable practices exacerbates resource depletion and social inequities, including unsafe working conditions and low wages in many regions.
Recognizing these multifaceted challenges, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) developed the "Sustainability and Circularity in the Textile Value Chain – A Global Roadmap." This roadmap outlines a strategic framework to reduce the sector's environmental impact and promote a transition to circular business models. The roadmap identifies nine building blocks, and three key priorities aimed at transforming the textile industry into a more sustainable and equitable sector. These include fostering sustainable business practices, reducing resource intensity, and addressing social issues within the value chain.
On November 26, 2024, UNEP, in collaboration with Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), organized a webinar titled From a Global Roadmap to Local Action: Circular Textiles for Asia Pacific. The event served as a platform to contextualize the global roadmap for the Asia-Pacific region, which is a major hub for textile production and consumption. The webinar gathered experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to discuss actionable strategies, share best practices, and highlight ongoing initiatives that address regional challenges while aligning with global sustainability goals.
This thematic webinar aimed to achieve the following objectives:
1. Raise Awareness: To increase awareness and understanding of the UNEP global roadmap for textile sustainability and circularity among regional stakeholders.
2. Stakeholder Engagement: To foster collaboration and dialogue among governments, private sector leaders, NGOs, and academia to align efforts toward sustainable textile practices while leveraging ongoing initiatives to prevent duplication.
3. Regional Adaptation: To identify and discuss region-specific challenges and opportunities, ensuring the adaptation of the global roadmap to local contexts
