UIC Union internationale des Chemins de fer

Senior Advisor Sustainability and Circular Economy

With its 200 members in 95 countries, 12 platforms and fora, 23 sectors, 135 working groups, 9 special groups and 2000 experts, UIC has a long history of serving member railways and facilitating international railway cooperation on technical subjects.

The Circular Economy Sector set up in may 2021 is integral part of the UIC Sustainability Platform. It has coordinated the REUSE Project and supervised the publication of the project's final report. Moreover, UIC has been hosting and curating the Zero Waste Railways Workshops. All content shared at the workshops can be found here Circular inflows and here Circular outflows.

UIC has adressed the topic of circular economy recently, however UIC member railway companies have been developing projects to increase the circularity of materials as well as the resilience of the railway systems in terms of resource management for a long time. The goal of this activity is to share best practices and innovations, define indicators, and involve all stakeholders of the value chain.
