Public Food Procurement as a Powerful Tool to Boost Territorial Food Systems
This policy brief provides recommendations on how to achieve the "Farm to Fork Strategy" proposed by the European Commission, with concrete objectives on sustainable food procurement and the EU School Scheme related to school food and education. The document focuses on three main areas: how to link small-scale farmers with the public plate; schools as a tool to address social equity, health and education; and enhancing multi-level food governance through national networks of procurers.
COACH is an EU funded project which aims to facilitate collaboration between farmers, consumers, local governments and other actors to scale up short agri-food chains which rebalance farmers’ position, create win-wins for producers and consumers and drive innovation in territorial food systems.
Sustainable Public Sector Food Procurement (SPSFP) can directly support small-scale farmers. It can be seen as an agent of change to achieve social, environmental and economic goals through a demand-driven approach.
