Open Letter: The Importance of Consumer Information in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastics Pollution

  • Published on November 18, 2024
This document is an Open Letter co-developed with Adelphi and HEJSupport, and is an output of the Working Group 1 on Providing Sustainability Product Information. The letter is another resource to inform the ongoing intergovernmental negotiations for a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.
The focus of the letter is on consumer information related to plastics products and packaging. It outlines key insights and principles, drawing from significant resources such as the Guidelines for Providing Sustainable Product Information and the United Nations Consumer Protection Guidelines. The letter comprises key wording and instrumental research on the topic, condensed for easy reading in a 2-pager format.

The letter seeks to inform the committee on the specifics of consumer information and plastics products, in order to support the development of a robust binding instrument that duly incorporates responsible consumer information in its strategies to combat the escalating plastic crisis.
