GTPI Self-Auditing Toolkit for Single-Use Plastics for Accommodation Providers and Cruises

  • Published on June 12, 2025

The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) self-auditing toolkit is designed to help hotels and accommodation providers assess and monitor their use of single-use plastic (SUP) items across operational areas. The toolkit supports businesses in identifying reduction opportunities and tracking progress over time.

The toolkit comprises three components:

1. SUP Checklist for Hotels and Accommodations
A practical Word document that can be used during walkthrough assessments. It helps ensure all SUP products in use across different areas of the property are identified and recorded.

2. SUP Results Spreadsheet
A data visualisation tool that compiles results from the checklist. It shows the total number of unique SUP items used (e.g. clingfilm = 1 product) and the number of operational areas in which each item appears (e.g. clingfilm used in kitchen, guest rooms, and spa = 3 instances). This structure allows users to monitor reductions in usage instances without affecting the count of unique products, enabling clear and targeted tracking of progress.

3. Monthly SUP Purchase Record
A spreadsheet designed to document SUP purchases over time. It includes a graphic page to track changes from a selected baseline year (e.g. 2024) through to 2030. The spreadsheet can be adapted to reflect the specific SUP items used by the business, provided consistency is maintained across product rows to ensure valid year-on-year comparisons.

Together, these tools provide a structured approach to mapping, reducing, and reporting on single-use plastics within the hospitality sector.

The following video, recorded by GTPI trainer Jo Hendrickx (who developed the tools), presents in detail how the toolkit should be used. Please refer to the information from 0:45 - 10:00 of the video.
