Consumer Information & Protection and Multilateral Environmental Agreements: Pathways for Policy Integration

  • Published on July 15, 2025

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have partnered on a joint initiative to align consumer protection policies with selected MEA implementation. The collaboration emphasizes how consumer engagement and access to information can serve as powerful levers to advance the objectives of MEAs, particularly those linked to SDG 12 on Sustainable Consumption and Production.

This brochure identifies key findings, recommendations, and next steps for consumer protection agencies, MEA secretariats, and international organizations to advance sustainability through informed, consumer-focused policy. MEAs and consumer protection frameworks share important touchpoints − especially in promoting sustainable consumption, improving access to reliable information, and shaping consumer behaviour. The brochure is built upon the findings of the report Empowering Consumers, Protecting the Planet: Aligning consumer protection with selected multilateral environmental agreements
