Conducting a Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) Study

  • Published on July 16, 2025

This report introduces the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology developed by the European Commission to evaluate and improve the environmental performance of products throughout their life cycle. Using the Apparel and Footwear Category Rules (PEFCR v3.1) as a case study, it outlines how PEF studies combine primary and secondary data to assess products across 16 environmental impact categories — from raw material sourcing to end-of-life disposal. The report explains how results are compiled into a single PEF score, allowing fair comparisons between similar products and helping companies identify key environmental hotspots. It also highlights the increasing relevance of the PEF method as the EU moves toward legislation requiring substantiated environmental claims. This guidance serves as a practical tool for industry stakeholders looking to implement credible and harmonized sustainability assessments.
