  • Published on December 17, 2019
In 2012/13, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the German Tourism Association (DTV) jointly launched the "Sustainable tourist destinations in Germany"-competition, in which all tourism regions in Germany can participate. The aim of the competition is to promote sustainable tourism.
The competition promotes the three pillars of sustainability: In terms of ecological sustainability, one of the criteria evaluated is the extent to which tourism contributes to the protection of the environment, nature and landscape. In terms of economic sustainability, it is assessed whether strategies and concepts have been developed that are contribute to long-term economic success. Social sustainability also plays a role, for example with regard to regional culture and identity.
